Reinforcement for paper and board packaging

For packaging made from paper and board, reinforcement makes sense to maximise tear strength under heavy loads, moisture or rough handling.

The market for paper and board packaging amounts to 9 million tonnes in Germany and 40 million tonnes in Europe – reason enough for manufacturers to look closely at the composition of their products.

BAFATEX supplies manufacturers of such packaging – and of packaging aids such as adhesive tapes (see image on the left) – with laid scrims to reinforce their products. Laid scrims are yarn structures, a form of technical textile that differs significantly from conventional woven fabrics:
  • The yarns run diagonally / multiaxially in 6 directions, so they absorb acting forces much more effectively.
  • The yarns are not interlaced over and under each other but firmly bonded at their contact points by a binder.
  • They are more stable and at the same time more flexible.
  • Their higher structural tear strength allows wider meshes and a significantly lower weight per unit area.
  • Different materials can be combined, each with its specific properties.
  • The yarns can be treated with a wide range of impregnations for specific purposes.

Reinforcing packaging for transport and retail

BAFA® laid scrims are used to reinforce many types of packaging, including:

  • Closed paper bags
  • Paper bags with viewing windows (e.g. potato bags)
  • Corrugated shipping boxes and removal boxes
  • Envelopes
  • Folding cartons
  • Water-activated gummed tape
  • Bubble wrap
  • High-transparency films
  • Anti-corrosion paper

Added value through quality and cost efficiency

BAFA® laid scrims add value to retail and shipping packaging through higher product quality – value that justifies a better price.

Example: a corrugated folding box measuring 600 × 400 × 400 mm (approx. 23.6 × 15.7 × 15.7 in), C-flute, with a load capacity of up to 40 kg (approx. 88 lb), retails at discounters in Germany for €1.59. That leaves producers almost no margin, especially with domestic production. Retailers such as DIY stores respond by lowering the quality of their own brands and using thinner board (e.g. E-flute instead of C-flute). The result: boxes that tear quickly, dissatisfied customers and damage to the brand.

BAFA® laid scrims increase the tear strength and service life of paper and board products. Instead of expensive moisture-resistant paper grades or coatings, a lower-cost grade reinforced with laid scrims can be used. The bottom line: higher sales, better margins, more satisfied customers and a stronger brand.

Materials for logistics and food

The choice of material always depends on the application.

For food, legal requirements are rightly particularly strict.

Paper and board packaging in contact with food is governed by Regulation (EC) No 1935/2004, Regulation (EC) No 2023/2006 and – where recycled paper is used – Recommendation XXXVI of the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR).

Laid scrims made from cotton, jute, flax, polyester and polyamide yarns are particularly suitable for food applications. For high-quality protective packaging or valuable goods, yarns made from glass fibre, Kevlar® and carbon are also available.

Flexible, stable, light and
configurable

Several variables of BAFA® laid scrims can be adjusted to tailor the reinforcement to your requirements:

  • Material, material combinations and their properties (e.g. soft, hard, heat-sealable, waterproof, flame-retardant)
  • Yarn count
  • Yarn spacing
  • Elongation at break (1.7–23 %)
  • Breaking force (2.2–448 N)
  • Tenacity (13–355 cN/tex)
  • Crossing angle of the yarns (and thus force transmission)
  • Colours
  • Impregnation

Suitable for automated production

BAFATEX supplies laid scrims wound on rolls, designed for automated production and high processing speeds. One option is to bond them to the inside, as outer surfaces are usually designed for sales appeal (smooth, glossy, printed). In multi-layer products such as corrugated board, the laid scrim is bonded to the inside of the liner, in contact with the fluting. Alternatively or additionally, laid scrims can give glue flaps higher tear strength. BAFA® laid scrims are easy to cut and punch, making them suitable for die-cutting lines.

Sustainable, biodegradable reinforcements

BAFATEX is committed to the industry’s transition towards sustainable production. We supply manufacturers with environmentally sustainable laid scrims made from renewable raw materials and natural fibres.

This added value helps to win new customers, avoid plastic waste and meet upcoming, stricter environmental regulations more easily.
