Carrier material for manufacturing lightweight products

Manufacturers of fibre-reinforced lightweight products often face the challenge of holding fibres in shape and preventing them from shifting during production until the epoxy resin has cured.

BAFATEX supplies impregnated laid scrims as a carrier material for prepreg production. The laid scrims can be made from the same material as the reinforcing fibres – natural fibres, synthetic fibres or carbon, particularly for carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) parts. Combinations of different materials are also possible.

As pre-impregnated, flexible reinforcement, BAFA® laid scrims not only support efficient production of fibre-reinforced lightweight products. They also increase tensile and flexural strength, safety and durability, and cope better with high continuous stresses than rigid constructions. Their wide-meshed, multiaxial design allows maximum air permeability.

Thanks to these properties, the resulting fibre composites are often more cost-effective overall than lower-quality materials.

BAFATEX supplies prepreg manufacturers with high-strength, ultra-lightweight BAFA® laid scrims with an epoxy-compatible or heat-sealable finish. They fix carbon or glass fibre rovings in prepregs that are easy to cut and punch. We produce medium to large quantities to your material specifications and dimensions.

Versatile use

Prepreg manufacturers use BAFA® laid scrims wherever loads are exceptionally high and flexible materials are essential:

  • Aircraft (especially wings, fuselage and propellers)
  • Helicopters (especially rotor blades)
  • Wind turbine rotor blades
  • High-performance sailing yachts
  • Seat shells (image on the left: aircraft seats)
  • Ballistic protective vests
  • Motorsport
  • Aerospace
  • Orthoses for orthopaedic support
  • Prostheses
  • Sports equipment (skis, snowboards, kiteboards, table tennis bats)

Materials

Depending on the properties required, yarns are available
in the following materials:

  • Carbon fibres
  • Glass fibres
  • Polyester fibres
  • Polyamide fibres
  • Aramid fibres

BAFA® laid scrims are heat-sealable and epoxy-compatible. A flame-retardant finish is also available.

Processing in prepregs

BAFA® laid scrims are well suited to high-speed automated production in automated fibre placement (AFP) and automated tape laying (ATL) systems. Their excellent punching and cutting properties ensure high processing quality.

Depending on the material, impregnation with phenolic, vinyl ester or epoxy resins is possible at temperatures of up to 180 °C (356 °F) and pressures of up to 5 bar (approx. 73 psi). Using sealed pressure vessels (autoclaves), high-temperature materials can be cured void-free at the point of final processing.

The level of surface tack can be controlled through the production process. Shelf life is only limited once the laid scrims have been impregnated with catalyst or hardener.

Laid scrims are supplied in webs wound on rolls – just in time on request.
