BAFA® laid scrims are the “hidden” connectors and stabilisers of our world. They are rarely visible, yet they are found almost everywhere: in car and aircraft seats, wind turbines, packaging and adhesive tapes, wall and floor coverings – even in table tennis bats and sailing boats. Whenever a material needs to be strengthened, bonded, reinforced or held in shape, laid scrims are worth considering.

The reason lies in their properties: they are light, flexible and strong.

Their stability comes from their construction:
Unlike woven fabrics or conventional 0/90° laid scrims, BAFA® laid scrims consist of diagonally crossing yarns, fixed at the crossover points with high-adhesion binders. Depending on the number of longitudinal and diagonal yarns, this creates a close- or wide-meshed diamond structure that absorbs forces in six directions more effectively. For extreme loads, we also offer 8- and 10-directional BAFA® laid scrims.

BAFA® laid scrims stand out not only for their wide range of applications but also for their flexible construction and broad choice of materials. BAFA® laid scrims can be made from natural fibres such as cotton, flax or jute, and from man-made fibres such as polyester, polyamide, glass, viscose, carbon and others.

Almost any yarn – natural or man-made – can be used for a laid scrim.

‍
We tailor the finish of each BAFA® laid scrim to the customer’s requirements. Waterproof or flame-retardant, recyclable or biodegradable: almost any property can be achieved, even in small batch sizes. Depending on the application, we select the right material, structure and density for the BAFA® laid scrim – for optimum results.

Special constructions for demanding requirements

BAFATEX offers numerous ways to reinforce products in a targeted manner. These include yarn spacing, material, crossing angle, yarn count, impregnation, flame retardancy and water resistance.

A key variable is the number of directions in which BAFA® laid scrims absorb and distribute forces. While conventional woven fabrics have two yarn axes and absorb forces in four directions, classic BAFA® laid scrims run along three axes. This results in six-directional force absorption with individually adjustable crossing angles.

For particularly high loads, 8- and 10-directional BAFA® laid scrims are also possible – for example for sports equipment such as skis or heavily used sports floors.

The result is greater dimensional stability, lower elongation
and higher strength – at low weight.
This makes the technology particularly attractive for lightweight construction.

Some products require these properties
to an even greater degree.

For these, we produce special constructions: 8- or 10-directional BAFA® laid scrims with 4 or 5 axes, in which up to 4 or 5 yarns cross at a single point.

Application examples

8- and 10-directional BAFA® laid scrims are used in highly stressed sports equipment such as skis and in heavily used sports floors, among other applications. Benefits:

  • Extremely dimensionally stable
  • Minimal elongation
  • High strength, also in combination with nonwovens
  • Water-permeable for outdoor use, allowing drainage
    (e.g. synthetic running tracks)
